Throes Of Dawn: band bio (since 1994)

“Throes of Dawn’s music could be described as emotional dark metal with a progressive touch. Their unique sound is built on the combination of synths and guitars, spiced up with screaming vocals and clean vocals. There is lots of atmosphere and depth in their music, it flows like a soundtrack to a bittersweet end. The lyrical concept of Throes of Dawn is often poetic and it deals with the deeper and darker aspects of the human psyche; like solitude, broken dreams and despair…”

From Official Biography

1994 – Throes Of dawn was formed in Vaasa, Finland by – Henri Koivula (vocals) and Jani Heinola (synth). The first demo – called “Autumn Winds’” - was recorded and released by 200 copies in the Autumn of the same year. Band had a few performances.

1995 – ToD signed a deal with Woodcut Records for release of two albums. Band began to search studio for recording their debut album. The first promo tape “Pakkasherra” was released by Woodcut Records as a teaser for the forthcoming debut album.

1996 – The recordings of the first album took place in Egotrip studio in Lempäälä. But its release was delayed because of some technical problems with the booklet.

1997 – Finally the first album called “Pakkasherra” was released in March. By the moment of the release musicians already prepared a new material for the following album. The album – under the name “Dreams of the Black Earth” – was released in Finland in December of ‘98, whereas the European release (in connection with different publishers) was stretched for some months: from January till April, 1999. By the way, guys have decided to create the booklet for this album on one’s own. As Henri recollects, he has taken some photos, and then Jani altered them by means of Photoshop. And as a result they had got the best booklet which very precisely transmitted the contents and the general atmosphere of the album.

In November Throes of Dawn played act together with Satyricon in Helsinki.

1999 – The “Dreams of the Black Earth” was released worldwide. From official biography: “The result sounded unique. The music of Throes of Dawn had developed enormously from “Pakkasherra”. Where “Pakkasherra” sounded raw and technical “Dreams of the Black Earth” showed much more mature and sensitive side of the band”. It was the symbolical end of “black influence” because next Throes Of Dawn’s albums is a beautiful atmospheric dark metal with more depressive lyrics. Besides, this album was last of stipulated by contract with Woodcut Records and for the following releases TOD needed to search for the new publisher. The choice was Italian label Wounded Love. Band signed the contract with them for release of two albums.

The band’s founders – Henri Koivula and Jani Heinola – moved from their hometown Vaasa to Helsinki and a few months later Throes Of Dawn was resurrected. However, the band’s line-up has been completed only in 2002. By this time Jani and Henri have started creation of a material for a new album.

2003-2006 – The fourth album “Quicksilver Clouds” was recorded between August and November 2003 at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki. The album came out in Europe 27 of July, 2004 through Avantgarde music (earlier Wounded Love). The first TOD’s video on the “Vertigo” song was included in the metal DVD compilation of the Finnish Inferno magazine.

In USA “Quicksilver Clouds” was released by Cleopatra Records in 15 of February, 2005. American’s edition has the different booklet and video “Vertigo” as a bonus.

2007 - Early this year guys have recorded demo of the fifth album which should be released in end of year… Band’s statement about the future album: “The final round of test recordings for the new songs is now ongoing and the material seems to be very promising! The music is now even more atmospheric and organic. The music is flowing through the speakers like a soundtrack to a dream.

Two untitled songs from demo was played in air during interview Henri and Jani for the finnish Bassoradio (program called Dark Side) in a January.

2008 – 2009 – Work on the album took more time than it was planned. Recording session was finished only late Summer 2009. Throes of Dawn have signed contract with finnish record label Firebox Music.
